A Rich Coaching History picture

Eleven coaches have led the proud Mercersburg wrestling program over the course of its 79 year history at the school. The venerable Fred Kuhn stands atop this distinguished list, having established the program as a private school national power during his tenure. Kuhn coached the Blue and White for 31 years, and in that time Mercersburg squads claimed five National Prep championships and four more runner-up finishes. Kuhn also produced 31 individual Lehigh champions and numerous placewinners.

Karl Reisner was another significant figure in the development of the Mercersburg program. A product of the Hill School and the University of Pennsylvania, Reisner led Mercersburg for 14 years, taking the helm on three different occasions. The veteran mentor coached three National Prep champions and his 1979 team finished unbeaten in dual meets and third at the National Prep Tournament.

The coaching ranks have also included the presence of an Olympian and two Mercersburg alums. John Engel was a national champion at 118 pounds for Lehigh University before coming to Mercersburg in 1931, serving as the second coach ever for the fledgling program Engel won a spot on the 1936 U.S. Olympic team and returned to the Olympics as an official in 1964. Engel coached Phil Nicholson'33, who took 4th at the 1932 National AAU Tournament, qualifying Nicholson for the Olympic trials. Nicholson was undefeated over two seasons and he earned the first varsity letter ever awarded for wrestling. Alumnus Howard Merrill'22 coached the first Mercersburg teams in 1930 and 1931, as the program moved from intramural status to varsity team stature.

Former head coach Rick Hendrickson helped write several significant chapters in Mercersburg wrestling as part of this select coaching fraternity. Hendrickson coached 28 National Prep Tournament placewinners, including four finalists and one champion. The fiery coach also helped 12 young men become PA Prep state champions. He became the school's career coaching victory leader in 2001 when he surpassed Kuhn's total of 115 wins and he has the third longest tenure in the team's rich history.
